Packaging & Shipping Guidelines

Packaging & Shipping Guidelines for Electronics & Office Equipment

  1. All shipments are F.O.B. to Luminous Electronics, Recycling, Inc. (LER) facilities unless otherwise specified in writing. All shipments shall meet US Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeling and containerized specifications.
  2. Large quantities of electronics (i.e. monitors, CPUs, copier, printers, televisions, etc.) should be placed on top of a pallet and use stretch film (shrink wrap) around the entire load - to prevent the items from moving during transportation. Here are some tips for packaging:
    Monitors

    • 14″ & 15″ monitors can be laid screen down on a pallet. Fit as many rows of monitor that fit on a 42″ x 48″ pallet. Separate the rows of monitors with a layer of cardboard to protect from breaking. Continue to add up to 5 rows with a maximum height of 6 - 6 1/2 feet. Shrink wrap tightly to hold the skid together.
    • 17″ and larger monitors can be done in the same manner (usually only 4 rows will fit).

    CPUs

    • Similar sized CPU’s can be stacked on pallets up to 5 feet tall. Build stacks on all 4 corners of the pallet (42″x48″) and then fill in the open spaces with odd sized units. Shrink wrap tightly to hold the units together (approx. 45- 50 PC’s).

    Printers

    • Stack as best as possible on a pallet and shrink-wrap. Place larger laser and line printers on the bottom and fill in open areas with smaller sized units.

    Miscellaneous Equipment

    • Small items (i.e. keyboards, mice, circuit boards, drives, etc.) can be placed in 4′ x 4′ x 4′ Gaylord boxes and stacked on skids up to 5 feet tall. Shrink-wrap tightly.
  3. All shipments must be accompanied by documentation from your company. For non-regulated shipments, a Bill of Lading or non-hazardous waste manifest may be used. A shipping label must be attached to each loose container or each pallet before shipping. The label must specify generator name, destination facility and contents of container.
  4. All shipments must have a pre-approved authorization by LER.
  5. LER will inspect all electronic recycling components upon arrival at the LER facility. Any defects or discrepancies, LER will notify the customer/shipper as soon as practical via phone or in writing, describing any defects and discrepancies.

Packaging & Shipping Guidelines for Mercury Containing Lamps

  1. Luminous Electronics Recycling, Inc. (LER) prefers to receive lamps intact and boxed, as per Universal Waste Rule.
  2. LER can provide boxes for a minimal charge, if necessary. Acceptable shipping containers include: manufacturers’ boxes in which the new lamps were shipped, LER four-foot, eight-foot boxes and fiber drums. LER prior to use must approve all other boxes.
  3. Please store lamps indoors and away from the elements. Boxes must be protected from rain and moisture.
  4. DO NOT TAPE lamps together.
  5. All precautions should be taken to eliminate breakage of lamps. Extra charges may result from broken lamps, taped lamps or wet boxes.
  6. If a box of lamps breaks, place the entire box in a plastic bag immediately. DO NOT open the box. Close and seal the bag. Notify LER of any broken lamps prior to shipment.
  7. For hazardous waste shipments, a Hazardous Waste Manifest must be completed for the shipment of lamps destined for LER facility. LER can supply and assist with the completion of the form. A licensed hazardous waste transporter must transport the materials. DOT Class 9 labels, and hazardous waste labels must be attached to all containers before transit. LER can supply these materials if necessary.
  8. For non-regulated shipments, a Bill of Lading or non-hazardous waste manifest may be used. Broken lamps must be shipped utilizing a Hazardous Waste Manifest and licensed hazardous waste transporter. LER can supply and assist with the completion of the appropriate paperwork. A shipping label must be attached to each loose container or each pallet before shipping. The label must specify generator name, destination facility and contents of container.

Packaging & Shipping Guidelines for Batteries

THIS INFORMATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

  1. DO NOT MIX CATEGORIES OF BATTERIES. However, batteries may be commingled within categories.
  2. All leaking batteries must be segregated and treated as hazardous waste.
  3. Batteries must be kept dry and in a closed secure container. DO NOT add Vermiculite, or any packing material to shipping container.
  4. To prevent short-circuiting, all batteries must have one of the following done:
    • terminals taped or silicon caulked
    • placed in plastic bags
    • inserted in original packaging
    • fully discharged (by an eligible technician)
  5. 55-gallon drums must be vented and should not exceed DOT recommended weight limits.
  6. Outer container labeling should indicate:
    • “Used batteries for recycling”
    • D.O.T proper shipping name
  7. If any containers with batteries appear to be heated or are emitting smoke, follow your established emergency response procedures to control the situation.
  8. Non-leaking batteries may be shipped as a “Universal Waste” on a Bill of Lading.
